Not correct about Presto supermarkets. They were the main large superstores in Ashington, Cramlington, Blyth, West Denton, North Shields, Hexham and with slightly smaller branches in Killingworth, Walker, Newgate Street, Newcastle. Also in Gosforth, Byker, Wallsend and the first at Preston Grange North Shiels which is where the name, Presto came from. They progressed from Liptons (Allied Supliers). In the 1990’s the were taken over by Safeway. In those days I called on all their branches selling for Van den Berghs margarine, fats and oils.
